Debra Sloan is an internationally exhibited artist who began her career in 1973 as a self-taught ceramicist, eventually going on to receive her BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2004. She has been a clay sculpture instructor for over two decades at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and at the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts. She has served and adjudicated for the CCBC and Circle Craft Boards and for the Filbert, Sunshine Art Gallery and the Sydney Art Exhibition.
Debra draws upon imagery of women, babies or various animals, to represent the interconnectivity between the human and natural worlds. Over time, her figures have transformed into what she refers to as “proto-human”. Her works are situated within metaphorical constructs, outside of time, space and how they are normally encountered.
