‘Life has never been dull…’ is a phrase used often by Laurie MacDonald. As a teenager, a desire to travel the world inspired her to move to Europe on her own at the age of nineteen. Her love of travel led her to explore 45 countries by sail, rail, air and thumb. Many of her designs were inspired by her travels and various cultures.
It was the technical challenge of making jewelry and the process of creating something beautiful from a flat piece of metal that felt both exciting and magical to her and motivated her passion for metalsmithing. The processes involved in metal work…the designing, annealing, cutting, sawing, shaping, filing, texturing, grinding, manipulating, polishing and more into forms from her imagination are rewarding and remind her of the constant changes in our lives as we are shaped by our experiences. Online learning to utilize methods/tools to achieve various techniques and processes is both exciting and satisfying leading to jewellery that speak as metaphors of life. Laurie’s jewelry appeals to collectors who have a love for individuality and an eye for original design. Each piece is handcrafted by Laurie in her sunny Victoria studio.
