sterling silver and brass

An extremely creative pair of earrings. Made using sterling silver and brass and presents a illustration of a human consuming something and then throwing it out, thus the name. Such a humorous, youthful pair!

Hiva Barikani is an Iranian multidisciplinary artist based on the traditional and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm(Musqueam), Skxwú7mesh (Squamish), and slilwta (Tsleil-Waututh) nations, known as Vancouver, British Columbia. Her diverse practice includes jewellery-making, ceramics, and sculpture, through which she explores whimsical and mystical forms inspired by human and animal imagery. Influenced by the joyful, expressive style of illustrator Sir Quentin Blake, her creations embody playful innocence reminiscent of naive art. Embracing a childlike perspective rooted in honesty, warmth, and humor, Hiva invites viewers into a world of imagination and curiosity. Her artwork subtly addresses deeper themes of hope, liberation, and spirituality, reflecting personal experiences and broader cultural conversations, ultimately encouraging introspection and challenging conventional boundaries. "In One Ear, Out The Other" is a jewellery piece made from sterling silver and brass, created using traditional metalsmithing techniques such as sawing, hammering, hand engraving, soldering, patina application, and polishing. This piece symbolizes the phenomenon where someone hears something but quickly forgets it or fails to pay attention, often because it isn't considered important. The left earring depicts a character shouting the word WISDOM, though the letters are slightly scrambled. Instead of taking the time to interpret or seek clarification, the character on the right earring discards the words, conveying a sense of fleeting attention or disregard for the message. This theme is particularly relevant in today's polarized political landscape, where facts and wisdom often fall on indifferent ears.

Hiva Barikani is an Iranian artist living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations. With nearly a decade of experience as a jewellery artist, Hiva specializes in metalsmithing, alongside ceramics and sculpture. Her multidisciplinary practice has been enriched through extensive studies in fine arts and multiple advanced metalsmithing courses, enabling her to execute numerous jewellery collections and commissioned works. Deeply inspired by childhood wonder and the expressive simplicity found in naive art, Hiva's work playfully merges whimsical and mystical elements, capturing creatures and forms imagined through meditative contemplation. Having grown up in Iran, Hiva's art subtly reflects personal experiences under an oppressive government context. Through her creative expression, themes of hope, spirituality, humor, and liberation are interwoven, forming a gentle yet powerful commentary on the constraints of the society she once inhabited. This nuanced approach enables her work to function as a form of silent resistance, embodying both personal liberation and universal aspirations toward freedom and simplicity. Hiva's artwork invites viewers into spaces of playful curiosity and heartfelt connection, reflecting a sincere commitment to authenticity and emotional resonance.
