silver and embroidery thread
Tyler's intention for these earrings was to mix two opposite forms of art that he is passionate about to create one pair of earrings. The two art forms Tyler chose to merge together are embroidery and jewellery. He has been embroidering for five years and making jewellery for three years now. When planning to use embroidery thread in metal there are unique design challenges, because embroidery and jewellery have completely different processes. Traditionally embroidery strings need to be threaded/secured into fabric with tension, and the string is fragile and flammable. Jewellery traditionally needs flames, manipulation, filing, sawing and polishing to be created. All things would damage embroidery strings. Tyler cleverly designed the earrings to represent an embroidery hoop, which is a tool used to tension fabric before embroidering to make a cleaner finish. The assembly of the piece and how it is constructed also mimics an embroidery hoop, using two plates that act as the hoops that then interlock with rivets to encase and hold the strings with tension in place, hence the name of the earings, "Tension". "cold connections" were used, meaning no flames were used in its connection, only plates that were riveted and filed together, so the string could be protected or replaced in the future. Tyler is excited to keep mixing art mediums in the future to see what is possible, and as a way to not have to sacrifice time for one art for the other.
