Kate Arkiletian makes the ordinary beautiful by embellishing utilitarian forms with carved lines. Her pieces are wheel thrown, painted with coloured slips and carved when leather hard to expose the clay underneath; this process is called sgraffito. The pieces are then fired to cone 10 in a gas reduction kiln.
The environment in which Kate lives informs her choice of imagery; the coastal mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
