Specialized hand-fabrication is at the forefront of the design process of these earrings. They were made by annealing, or softening, wire and then forming and delicately bending it to create intricate shapes. The work is held together with tension and precision before torch-soldering each intersection of the design together. Consequently, the use of these techniques illuminate the inspiration for the design, which calls into question motifs of control and confinement versus autonomy and freedom. The rigid structure of these earrings is quietly juxtaposed by the playful movement of the earrings components and the decorative elements that capture both light and lively kinetics of these materials. Special consideration of the surfaces finishes, both matte and high-polished, also enhance these ideas of contrast in the design.
Sarah Jane Sindler, owner and designer of KING RELD, began carving waxes with a friend in her home in 2013 and started casting them, primarily in sterling silver, with David I. Helfer Jewelers in Pittsburgh, PA. Eventually, she was able to begin a 5-year apprenticeship with the company that concluded in 2019. Sarah is a maker of one-of-a-kind, ready-made, and custom jewellery at her studio in Pittsburgh, PA. Sindler also instructs jewellery classes at Protohaven, Center for Contemporary Craft, and Pittsburgh Center for Arts & Media, and Touchstone Center for Craft and has been exhibited by the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG), as well as many other group and solo shows. She is a member of SNAG and the Precious Collective of International Art Jewellers. Her work has been commissioned and collected by clients both locally and nationally.
