Carmel Boerner lives and works in Penticton, BC, Canada, on the lands of the Syilx Okanagan people. She studied jewellery design at Vancouver Community College, graduating in 2017. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, the US, and Europe. Carmel has worked for over 30 years in non-profits in Canada and the US. She is an avid reader, seamstress, slow stitcher, gardener, and dog lover.
Inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi—the acceptance of impermanence and imperfection—Carmel's work often features decaying objects revealed as raw gems, remaining exactly as they were found. Marks of hand fabrication are important—she wants the wearer to feel the maker's presence.
