4 x 4 x 1.5 cm; recycled copper with sterling silver posts; sawing, soldering

Carmel is inspired by the Japanese aesthetic wabi-sabi, which celebrates graceful aging, imperfection, and the maker’s hand. The natural beauty of the Okanagan, which has fascinated her since she moved to Penticton in April 2023, inspired these earrings. Their designs reflect the transformation of natural elements, but also the greater breadth of Carmel’s references, as she moved from the oceans and mountains of Vancouver to the lakes and vineyards of the Okanagan.

“Burst”, one pair made with recycled scrap copper, the other with sterling silver, are inspired by desiccated, jagged pods that have exploded, releasing their seeds. They are also reminiscent of sea anemones, tendrils extending from their mouths, abundant on the west coast. Because of the placement of the earring posts, these nestle into the curve between the head and ear, transforming the wearer into fertile ground or protective rock. Rough cut and as imperfect as nature, these copper earrings will weather dramatically as they age, while the silver will gently tarnish.

True to Carmel’s practice, these pieces will age gracefully, first shaped by the maker, then the wearer, each celebrating imperfection.
