Maaka Squier grew up in the beautiful coastal region of British Columbia. At a very early age she learned about art and embroidery from her mother, who was a gifted horticulturalist. Maaka spent many happy childhood hours exploring the realms of imagination in the heavenly gardens that her parents created and developed a love for flowers, gardening and a deep connection to nature. This, and her ever-present sense of wonder at the beauty of creation are the inspirations for her fiber art work.
Art has been a gift and passion all of Maaka's life and she has studied fervently the lives, works and many techniques of the Masters such as Michelangelo, DaVinci, Monet and Van Gogh, as well as the encaustic painters of ancient times. A background of university studies in drawing and painting as well as over 30 years professional experience in many genres of the arts including watercolor, colored pencil, pastel, acrylic, mixed-media and encaustic guides Maaka in the composition, form and color harmonies, while the fiber art medium allows her the ability and freedom to create texture and 3-dimensional relief far beyond what she could achieve in a painting.
As well, Maaka has been gifted with beautiful visions throughout her lifetime and she is passionate about sharing the healing beauty of these inspirations with others.
