Denise has worked in clay since obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1999. After serving as an apprentice to potters on the province’s south shore, she established her first studio just outside of Dartmouth, NS. Since moving to Burnaby, BC, She has been working to re-establish her studio practice. Working in clay gives Denise a sense of fulfillment. While the process and the product are important to the artist, she also enjoys the way pots connect people. Textiles and patterns from nature inspire the work in ^6 porcelainious stoneware.
Denise’s recent work is heavily influenced by South Asian textiles and East Asian “Blue and White”. Some of the Blue & White patterns come from discarded Indian Textile
print blocks and the area they cover suggest scraps of fabric placed on/around the piece. Much of Denise’s work is thrown, often incorporating hand-built elements. Carving, texturing and inlay are decorative elements widely used in her pieces. Her goal is to create work that can be appreciated for their form, colour and feel but also used every day around the home.
