Carmel is inspired by the Japanese aesthetic wabi-sabi, which celebrates graceful aging, imperfection, and the maker’s hand. The natural beauty of the Okanagan, which has fascinated her since she moved to Penticton in April 2023, inspired these earrings. Their designs reflect the transformation of natural elements, but also the greater breadth of Carmel’s references, as she moved from the oceans and mountains of Vancouver to the lakes and vineyards of the Okanagan.
Melt”, dangling earrings fashioned from patinaed sterling silver, are evocative of snow melting from a wintery tree, forming glistening droplets that change with the wearer’s every move. They are also like glowing bubbles rising, chasing each other to the ocean’s surface.
True to Carmel’s practice, these pieces will age gracefully, first shaped by the maker, then the wearer, each celebrating imperfection.
