Kate Arkiletian makes the ordinary beautiful by embellishing utilitarian forms with carved lines. Her pieces are wheel-thrown, painted with coloured slips, and carved when leather-hard to expose the clay underneath. This process is called sgraffito. The pieces are then fired to cone 10 in a gas reduction kiln. The environment in which Kate lives informs her choice of imagery, including the coastal mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
