Design functionality and craftsmanship are crucial elements in Robert Mitchell's work. As a jeweller, he creates timeless pieces or wearable sculptures that enhances the human form. Using the ancient technique of fusing, he creates contrasting textured surfaces of natural motifs, such as fossils juxtaposes with clean, polished lines, to create visual tensions of the ageless balance between the past, present, and future.
His current work is based on his continued fascination with our connection to water, the ocean, the fluidity of time and a sense of place. While the visual elements in the work refer directly or indirectly to the ocean and water, the slow nature of the work references time and history. This reflects the human spirit in the context of our affinity for water. It flows through our bodies and without it we would cease to exist. From our conception we are immersed in it, and it comforts us. We are emotionally connected to the natural aquatic environment because it increases the fluid expansion of our ideas and improves our very existence. We constantly evolve and move forward, always connected to the past, always connected to water.
