A design in the beginning can seem easy, and simple enough to produce. In your mind you imagine the design as a finished object, and in that vision everything works. It already exists. You have an idea of what it will be, and you believe your idea is correct. You start and are quickly proven wrong. This can be discouraging. But when you finish, you realize that the initial idea is still there. It still exists, inseparable from what it has become.
Fia Cooper is a custom metalwork designer and jewelry artist living and working on the Sunshine Coast, British Columbia. She attended Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson BC, majoring in metal and studying jewelry. Furthering her education, Fia worked as a studio assistant in the fields of bronze casting and blacksmithing. Upon graduating she worked as a welder; designing, building, and installing custom metalwork. She creates her work with curiosity and a playful regard for the patterns and geometries that shape our world.
Her work has been shown at various galleries across BC including the Crafthouse Gallery, Pendulum Gallery, and Ayden Gallery. Cooper has received public commissions from IntraWest resort, the municipality of Whistler, and the Ministry of Highways. In 2017, she taught direct bronze casting as part of Rhynie Woman Artist Collective's collaboration with the Northern Picts Archaeological dig site in Rhynie, Scotland. A former board member of the Vancouver Metal Arts Association, Fia Cooper was awarded first place in the Limited Edition category at the CCBC Earring Show in 2016. In 2020 she completed a solo exhibition titled Belonging with the Craft Council of British Columbia.
