British jeweller Kate Bajic has over 17 years of experience exhibiting and selling her work in galleries and at exhibitions throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. She lives and works in a rural village in the Midlands, using the countryside around her as inspiration for her beautiful contemporary jewellery. Drawing on interests in both natural form and science Kate focuses on lichen species and their chemical compound structures as the main inspiration for her work. Their diversity offers a rich source of design material and through photography and sample collection, Kate examines their minute complexity and translates aspects of this into her jewellery.
The complex patterns and shapes she discovers are simplified, enlarged and repeated in intricately composed designs. Pieces are hand pierced and textured using precious metals often combined with semi-precious stones. Designs evolve through experimenting with composition, playing with contrasting colours, or by adding textural details such as hand stamped surface finishes and tiny elements of gold. Traditional jewellery hand working is a major part of Kate’s creative practice. This gentle and involved approach allows slight imperfections, created by the human hand during the making process, to bring a richness to her work. Something Kate celebrates and hopes brings a vibrancy and value to her jewellery. All Kate’s jewellery is created as limited edition or one-off pieces, which are designed to sit together and compliment each other, whilst still being unique and individual. They offer a tribute to the beauty and preciousness of the tiny exquisite botanical forms that inspire them.
Discovering jewellery design as a career was a revelation for Kate. Something she first encountered through attending an informal silver jewellery workshop. She discovered working with metal and working with her hands was something she loved, and was good at. Kate was looking for a career change and took full advantage of this new passion, signing up first to complete an Art Foundation Course then going on to University to complete a Bachelor of Arts in silversmithing/jewellery, and finally 10 years later going back to complete a Masters in Art and Design Studio Practice. She has been a studio jeweller now for over 17 yrs and has been fortunate to have sold and exhibited her work both nationally and internationally, through galleries and at exhibitions. Kate is currently exhibiting at the UK Crafts Council's prestigious event, Collect International Art Fair for Craft and Design, with Design Nation until March 24th 2021. She was also invited to exhibit at LOOT at the Museum of Art and Design in New York in 2017 and has been selected to show her jewellery at SIERAAD Art Fair in Amsterdam in 2018 and 2019.
