A Cube in Curves is a whimsical display case, with a Japanese influence and an effort in complex joinery.  I wanted every piece to have an asymmetric curve except for the Cube and shelves. To that effect the steam bent legs were the template to all the other curves in this piece. The top cross piece and the centre shelf support have the same curve that was applied to the legs, continuing with that I carved the drawer pulls with the same curve and installed with the same angle of reference as the top cross piece.

For the cube I decided on using a “waterfall” effect where the wood grain runs seamlessly around the cube, it was all cut from a single piece of rippled broad leaf maple. The joinery was an incredibly enjoyable challenge it is constructed with mortise and tenon joinery, which for the top cross piece was quite the challenge.

The curved frame is Eastern Beech, the cube and shelves are Western Broad Leaf Maple and the drawers are white oak.
