silicone, vinyl, sterling silver, chrysoprase
Silicone is a strange material to work with, as it doesn’t adhere to anything but itself. It is too stretchy to be riveted or claw set and is most common in a jewellery piece. Combining all of the materials and elements in these earrings was tricky. Between the silicone and the vinyl, there is a piece of sterling silver sheet on which the stone settings and earring wires are soldered, and the vinyl wrapper is riveted on. Soldered on the opposite side of the vinyl is a silver rebar wire which travels in six directions. The rebar was suspended upside down over the mold for the gum, and the silicone was poured in. When dried, the end result was the silicone being fully cured around the silver, attaching it securely to the rest of the earring.
